Inspired by Gond architecture and with just 12 beautiful bungalows leading out onto open terraces overlooking the wilderness, Kanha Earth Lodge is nestled in a secluded tribal hamlet on the border of the park’s buffer zone. Staff are renowned for their warmth and hospitality, their experience as naturalists and their commitment to conservation. It’s just 30 minutes from Kanha National Park, one of the most celebrated tiger reserves in India, so days can be spent spotting big cats and eagles, sloths and hard ground swamp deer, which the park has successfully brought back from near extinction.

The first thing you’ll notice is how sensitively the lodge has been built; mud plaster, recycled wood, terracotta tiles and timber beams have all been used to create warm ambience and an inviting hideaway feel. Large rooms all have forest views, the stylish public lounge is clad in local stone and perfect for settling back with hot chai and the infinity pool is set among mahua trees. Dining here is a huge deal; the staff love growing their own vegetables to put straight on your plate and on the long communal table next to a roaring fire both Indian and continental cuisine is served with locally sourced fresh produce from surrounding villages. You can also expect outdoor barbecues, bush dinners and guided tours of both the kitchen’s gardens and the village markets.
