This traditional ranch in Baja California is one of the world’s original wellness retreats.
There’s a conscious community feel at Rancho La Puerta that’s been honed over decades of wellness holidays since its founder first pioneered this style of wellness retreat. Guests start their wellness journeys together on the same Saturday – an element that sets this resort apart from the rest and means you’re likely to leave feeling like you’re part of the family. Just south of the USA border, the ranch sits on the slopes of Mount Kuchumaa which is considered sacred by Native Americans.

You’re encouraged to switch off – mobiles are only allowed in rooms and while there is Wi-Fi, it’s only available in lounges and the e-centre so you can briefly catch up on emails if you need to and then switch off again in a moment. The fitness timetable is packed with Pilates, circuit training, yoga and dance classes to get you active and there’s an art studio and gallery if you want to exercise your creativity too. Scented with wisteria, jasmine, lavender and sage, the gardens are a treat to wander in when you’re after some downtime, with plenty of hammocks laid out for book reading and naps. The sunrise hikes are a guest favourite and a spectacular way to start your day. To soothe your amped-up muscles, The Ranch Spa has a mass of nature-led treatments including a loofah massage using crushed rosemary straight from the gardens.

Dining is a shared occasion with your fellow guests, served either in the Spanish colonial dining room or out under olive trees with varying table sizes to choose from depending on your mood. The cuisine is plant-based with some fish, and wine lovers will be pleased to know that unlike most wellness retreats, wine is encouraged here in moderation. It’s only served on Friday evenings but there is a store on-site where you can buy a bottle.
