This contemporary high-design hotel features innovative design elements and has a quiet setting outside of the city centre. You can escape the tourist crowds but still be within walking distance of the historic centre and main attractions such as the Uffizi Gallery, Brunelleschi’s Dome and the Pitti Palace. The post-modern design of the hotel provides an interesting contrast to the traditional neighbourhood in which it lies. San Frediano is a charming culturally-rich district offering a real flavour of Old Florence. Wander narrow lanes to discover artisan shops selling everything from hand-made hats, shoes and leather bags to marbled paper and books bound by hand. Watch these skilled craftsmen at work and pick up some authentic souvenirs.

The hotel’s super-chic interiors are adorned with unusual features, from the chairs which are sculpted in the shape of faces, to the bar seating area which resembles a giant red spring. Dine at the S-shaped communal table, which lies under a stained-glass ceiling at the UNA restaurant and tuck into Tuscan specialities and international cuisine. And in the summer months you can head out to the courtyard. There is also a café and lounge bar for cocktails.

The dark corridors that lead to the guest rooms are a nod to Tuscany’s rich history – the doors are framed by full-length Renaissance-style portraits, but the interiors are thoroughly modern with low lighting and black leather or fuchsia panelled walls with twinkling fibre optic lights. The Double Classic Rooms are cosy and provide a comfortable base.
